What IELTS score do you actually need for NMBI?
If you trained as a nurse or midwife outside Ireland and English is not your first language, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) will ask you to prove your English before you can register. Most candidates know the headline number is "Band 7" — but the detail is where applications succeed or stall.
For the Academic IELTS test, NMBI requires:
Read that carefully, because it is the single most misunderstood rule in the process. "No skill below 6.5" is true — but it is not the whole rule. You cannot, for example, score 6.5 in both Writing and Speaking; only one skill may sit at 6.5, and the other three must reach a full 7.0. A 7.5 in Reading does not buy back a second 6.5.
If you prefer the OET — the healthcare-specific test — NMBI accepts OET Nursing with Grade B in three components and C+ in one.
Who has to sit a test at all?
Not everyone does. NMBI offers three pathways, and the English test is only the third:
Trained in English in a recognised majority-English country: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the USA or the UK.
Registered and practised in English — three years of post-registration practice within the last five years in one of those countries.
An English language test — IELTS or OET — the route most internationally trained nurses take.
If you qualify under Pathway 1 or 2, you may not need IELTS at all. It is worth confirming before you book an exam.

Where nurses actually lose the marks
In our experience, the band that holds nurses below 7.0 is almost always Writing or Speaking — rarely Listening or Reading. The good news is that these are the two skills where a clear, examiner-led method moves the needle fastest, because the gap is usually a handful of repeated, fixable habits rather than a lack of English.
How we help
Bespoke IELTS specialises in exactly this: getting nurses to the precise NMBI profile — three skills at 7.0 and a safe 6.5 — with examiner-level feedback on the Writing and Speaking that decide it.

Quick answers
Does NMBI accept General Training IELTS? No — it must be Academic IELTS, or IELTS Academic for UKVI.
Can I use the One Skill Retake to fix one band? No. NMBI does not accept the IELTS One Skill Retake.
Is OET easier than IELTS for nurses? Neither is easier — OET is healthcare-context English, which some nurses find more natural. NMBI accepts both; choose the one that fits how you communicate.
